Every teacher will have students with special needs...
Inevitably. And because of this fact, I think that all education majors, including general education majors, should take (at least) one special education course at the college level. It is extremely important that all educators have knowledge about IEPs, IDEA, NCLB, and certain disabilities that will affect a student's educational performance. Because mainstreaming and inclusion is being pushed even more in today's society, the number of students with disabilities in general education classrooms is growing! Therefore, general education teachers should have the knowledge of, at minimum, the basics of special education, because successful teachers are ones who can understand and relate to their students.

I agree. Moreover, I think that it's not only teachers who need more training in special education, but people of other professions as well should know at least something about how to deal with special needs people.
ReplyDeleteI also agree. Because I am a deaf education major which is under special education I have taken and have experience with children that have special needs. I do agree with you that students should at least take one or more classes on dealing with students and their special needs. These students need teachers who are trained and capable of not just teaching them but possibly altering lesson plans to fit their needs.
ReplyDeleteI also also agree! I talked to my roomate who is a regular elementary education teacher and even she said she wishes that she was required to take a class about special education. I think CEP 451 would be a good class for general education majors to take, because that class is all about inclusion.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree! CEP 451 talks about both special education and general education, and them intertwined... like it actually is in most schools! You should tell your roommate to take that class, even though it is not required!
